Understanding SSC CHSL
The Staff Selection Commission Combined Higher Secondary Level (SSC CHSL) exam is conducted annually to recruit candidates for Lower Division Clerk (LDC), Junior Secretariat Assistant (JSA), Postal Assistant (PA), Sorting Assistant (SA), and Data Entry Operator (DEO) posts in various government departments.
Eligibility Criteria
The minimum educational qualification for SSC CHSL is a 12th class pass (Higher Secondary) from a recognized board. The age limit ranges from 18 to 27 years, depending on the post. Reserved category candidates receive age relaxations as per government rules.
SSC CHSL 2026 Exam Pattern
Tier 1 — Computer Based Test
The Tier 1 examination is an objective-type online test with 100 questions carrying 200 marks. The duration is 60 minutes. It covers four subjects: General Intelligence (25 questions), English Language (25 questions), Quantitative Aptitude (25 questions), and General Awareness (25 questions). Negative marking of 0.50 marks applies for each incorrect answer.
Tier 2 — Descriptive Paper
Tier 2 is a descriptive paper conducted in pen-and-paper mode. Candidates must write an essay of 200-250 words and a letter or application of 150-200 words in English or Hindi. This paper carries 100 marks with a duration of 60 minutes. It tests your ability to express ideas clearly and effectively in writing.
Tier 3 — Skill Test / Typing Test
The final tier is a skill test that varies by post. For LDC and JSA posts, candidates must have a typing speed of 35 words per minute in English or 30 words per minute in Hindi. For DEO posts, a data entry speed of 8,000 key depressions per hour is required.
Preparation Strategy for SSC CHSL
Since the qualification requirement is only 12th pass, the difficulty level of SSC CHSL is moderate compared to CGL. However, competition is intense due to the large number of applicants. Focus on speed and accuracy for Tier 1 — practice solving questions within time limits. For Tier 2, practice essay and letter writing regularly on current topics.

Career Growth After SSC CHSL

The starting salary ranges from Rs. 19,900 to Rs. 25,500 per month (7th Pay Commission), plus DA, HRA, and other allowances.
