UPSC Exam Pattern and Structure
The UPSC CSE is a three-stage examination process designed to test a candidate’s analytical abilities and depth of knowledge.
Stage 1: Preliminary Examination
The Prelims is a screening test consisting of two objective-type (MCQ) papers. The marks obtained in this stage are not counted for the final merit list, but candidates must clear it to qualify for the Mains.
- Paper I (General Studies): 100 questions for 200 marks. This paper covers topics like history, geography, polity, economy, environment, and current events.
- Paper II (CSAT): 80 questions for 200 marks. This paper tests comprehension, logical reasoning, and basic numeracy. It is qualifying in nature, requiring a minimum score of 33%.
- There is a negative marking of one-third of the marks for each incorrect answer.
Stage 2: Mains Examination
Candidates who clear the Prelims cut-off are eligible for the Mains exam, which is a descriptive written test comprising nine papers. The scores from the Mains exam contribute to the final merit ranking.
- Paper A & B (Qualifying): One Indian Language paper and one English Language paper (300 marks each). Candidates must score at least 25% in these papers.
- Paper I: Essay (250 marks)
- Papers II to V: General Studies I-IV covering subjects like Indian Heritage, Governance, Technology, Ethics, etc. (250 marks each)
- Papers VI & VII: Optional Subject Papers 1 & 2 (250 marks each). Candidates choose one optional subject from a list provided by UPSC.
Stage 3: Personality Test (Interview)
Those who qualify the Mains are summoned for the final stage, the Personality Test or Interview. This round is conducted by the UPSC board to assess a candidate’s suitability for a career in the civil services. It carries 275 marks. The board evaluates qualities like mental alertness, critical thinking, leadership, and moral integrity. The final merit list is prepared based on the total marks obtained in the Mains Examination (1750 marks) and the Interview (275 marks), making a total of 2025 marks.
