Teacher Resume: Format, Samples and a Free Template for Indian Schools
Updated 29 October 2026 · Facts checked against the sources listed at the end
A good teacher resume is one or two pages that tell a school, quickly and honestly, what you teach, which classes you can teach, whether you meet the eligibility rules (degree, B.Ed or D.El.Ed, CTET or state TET), and what you have done in a classroom. In India, the person reading it is usually a principal or a coordinator with a pile of applications, so the order of things and the way you write them matter as much as what you have.
This guide gives you the teacher resume format section by section, ready career objectives for PRT, TGT, PGT, coaching and fresher roles, before-and-after experience lines, a skills table, a full sample resume you can copy, and a checklist before you send it. Where a rule matters, such as CTET marks or NCTE qualifications, it comes from the official notice, with a link.
What a school looks for in a teacher resume
Most resume advice online is written for American schools. Indian schools read a teacher resume in a different order. In a first look of a minute or two, a principal in a CBSE, ICSE or state board school usually checks five things:
- Post and subject: are you applying for PRT, TGT or PGT, and in which subject? If this is not on top, your resume may go to the wrong pile.
- Eligibility: your degree with marks, your B.Ed or D.El.Ed, and CTET or state TET where the post needs it.
- Classroom experience: which classes, which board, how many years, and where. School internship counts for a fresher.
- Fit: medium of teaching, extra duties you can take (class teacher, exam work, activities), and digital skills.
- Trust: clear dates with no unexplained gaps, real references, and no spelling mistakes.
So a teacher resume is not a list of everything you have done. It is an answer to those five questions, in that order. Everything below follows that idea.
| Word | What it usually means | When to use it |
|---|---|---|
| Resume | One or two pages, focused on the job you want | Private schools, coaching institutes, online teaching jobs |
| CV (curriculum vitae) | Longer, full record including research and publications | College and university posts, research roles |
| Biodata | A short personal sheet with family and personal details | Only when an advert asks for it; many schools now use resume and biodata to mean the same thing |
If an advert says "send your CV" for a school teacher job, send a teacher resume. Nobody will reject a clear two-page resume because it was called a CV.
The teacher resume format, section by section
Use this order. It puts the things a school checks first at the top. Keep the headings exactly as simple as these, because some schools paste resumes into a spreadsheet or an applicant system.
| Section | What to write | Fresher tip |
|---|---|---|
| Name and contact | Full name, phone (with WhatsApp if the same), a plain email, city | Use an email with your name, not a nickname |
| Post applied for | PRT / TGT / PGT / faculty, with subject and level | Write one post per resume; make a copy for each school |
| Profile or career objective | Two or three lines: subject, classes, board, years, one strength | Lead with your training and internship |
| Eligibility and qualifications | Degrees with university, year and percentage; B.Ed or D.El.Ed; CTET or TET with paper and year | Put this above experience |
| Teaching experience | School, role, classes, board, dates; three to five lines of what you did | School internship, tuition and coaching count |
| Skills | Teaching, subject, digital and language skills, grouped | Name tools you have actually used |
| Training and certificates | Workshops, online courses, CPD hours | DIKSHA, SWAYAM or board workshops all count |
| Achievements and activities | Results you can prove, events you ran, clubs you led | College events, NSS, sports, competitions |
| Languages | Languages you can teach in, and others you speak | Say "can teach in" for the medium of teaching |
| Personal details | Only what the advert asks for | Keep it short |
| References | Two names with role and phone, or "available on request" | Your B.Ed supervisor or internship mentor |
Notice what is missing: a photo, your father's name, religion and marital status. Add them only if the advert asks. Some private schools still ask for a photo; if they do, use a recent, plain passport-size photo at the top right. Never put your Aadhaar number, PAN or bank details on a resume that you send to many places.
Your full name and date of birth should match your Class 10 certificate. Exam bodies use that record: the CTET bulletin, for example, tells candidates to give their date of birth as recorded in the Class 10 board certificate. A school will check your documents against it, so do not let your resume say something different.
Write your qualifications so a school can check them fast
This is the section that most teacher resumes get wrong. Schools that follow NCTE rules need to see not only your degrees but also your marks, because the minimum qualifications are written in percentages.
For example, the NCTE notification of 29 July 2011, made under the Right to Education Act, lists the minimum qualifications for Classes I to VIII. For Classes I to V, one route is Senior Secondary (Class 12) with at least 50% marks and a 2-year Diploma in Elementary Education, plus a pass in a Teacher Eligibility Test (TET). For Classes VI to VIII, one route is graduation with at least 50% marks and a 1-year B.Ed, plus a pass in TET. There are other routes too, such as the 4-year B.El.Ed, and a relaxation of up to 5% in the qualifying marks for reserved categories.
So if you write only "B.A., B.Ed", the principal has to ask you for your marks. If you write "B.A. (English, History), Delhi University, 2022, 61%", they can tick the box at once.
| Qualification | Write it like this |
|---|---|
| Class 12 | Class 12, CBSE, Science stream, 2018, 78% |
| Graduation | B.Sc. (Physics, Chemistry, Maths), University of Rajasthan, 2021, 64% |
| Post-graduation | M.Sc. Mathematics, University of Rajasthan, 2023, 68% (for PGT posts) |
| Teacher training | B.Ed, NCTE-recognised college name, university, 2025, 74% |
| Elementary diploma | D.El.Ed (2 years), DIET or college name, 2024, 71% |
| CTET | CTET Paper II (Maths and Science), qualified, December 2024, with your score |
| State TET | REET Level 2 (Science and Maths), qualified, 2025 |
CTET and TET: what to say
Write the paper as well as the year. In the CTET, Paper I is for a person who wants to teach Classes I to V and Paper II is for Classes VI to VIII; someone who wants to teach both levels must take both papers. A score of 60% or more counts as a TET pass, as the CTET bulletin states, quoting an NCTE notification of 11 February 2011.
You do not need to explain how old your CTET is. The CTET bulletin for September 2026 says the CTET qualifying certificate is valid for life for all categories, and that a person who has qualified may sit the exam again to improve the score. If you improved your score, write the better one.
Also note who needs it. The same bulletin says CTET applies to Central Government schools such as KVS and NVS and to schools under some Union Territories, that unaided private schools may choose to consider it, and that state government and aided schools consider the TET of their state. It also says CBSE-affiliated schools must appoint teachers for Classes I to VIII who have passed CTET or a TET. So for a CBSE school job at primary or middle level, put your CTET or TET very near the top.
Rules change. The minimum qualifications above come from the 2011 notification; NCTE has issued later ones for other levels and for new courses. Always read the qualifications in the school's own advert, and the current list on the NCTE website, before you apply.
Keep your documents ready in DigiLocker
CBSE gives CTET mark sheets and eligibility certificates in digital form in the candidate's DigiLocker account. The bulletin says these are digitally signed, legally valid under the IT Act, and carry a QR code that can be checked with the DigiLocker app. DigiLocker is run by the Ministry of Electronics and IT. Pull your marksheets and certificates into it before you apply, so you can share them the same day a school asks.
Career objective for a teacher resume: a formula and six samples
The career objective, or profile summary, is the two or three lines just under your name. A principal reads this first, so it must say who you are in the school's language. Use this formula:
Post + subject + classes and board + your strongest proof + what you will bring to this school.
Your strongest proof is one real thing: years of experience, a qualification like CTET, a result, or a skill the school asked for. Change the last part for every school, using words from its advert.
| Role | Sample career objective |
|---|---|
| PRT (fresher) | D.El.Ed and CTET Paper I qualified primary teacher, trained in activity-based teaching for Classes I to V during a 6-month school internship. I want to help young children build strong reading and number skills at your school. |
| PRT (experienced) | Primary teacher with 4 years of teaching English and EVS to Classes III to V in a CBSE school. Class teacher for 3 years, with parent meetings and reading programmes. Looking to bring phonics-based reading to your primary wing. |
| TGT Science | TGT Science with B.Sc., B.Ed and CTET Paper II, teaching Classes VI to X for 3 years in a CBSE school. I plan lab-based lessons and short weekly tests, and I want to teach science that students can see and do. |
| PGT Mathematics | PGT Mathematics (M.Sc., B.Ed) with 6 years of teaching Classes XI and XII, CBSE. Prepared students for board exams with past-paper practice and doubt sessions. Ready to take on board classes and the maths club. |
| Coaching faculty | Chemistry faculty for Class 11 and 12 and entrance exam batches, 5 years in a coaching institute. I write my own notes and test series and track each student's test scores. Looking for a senior faculty role. |
| Career changer | Engineer turned teacher: B.Tech, then B.Ed in 2025 with Physics and Maths. Two years of tutoring Class 9 and 10 students on weekends. I want to bring real-world examples into secondary science and maths. |
Every number in these samples is a placeholder. Put in your own real years, classes and results, and nothing you cannot show proof of. A made-up number on a resume is the fastest way to lose an offer at the document check.
Teaching experience: turn duties into results
Most teachers write experience as a list of duties: "Taught science. Checked notebooks. Attended meetings." Every teacher does that. The school wants to know how you did it, and what changed because of you.
For each job, write the school, city, your role, the classes, the board and the dates (month and year). Then add three to five lines. Each line starts with an action word, says what you did, and, where you can, what came of it.
| Weak | Strong |
|---|---|
| Taught Maths to Classes 6 to 8 | Taught Maths to Classes VI to VIII (4 sections, about 40 students each) using NCERT books and weekly 15-minute tests |
| Class teacher | Class teacher of Class VII for 2 years: attendance, report cards and parent-teacher meetings every term |
| Helped weak students | Ran remedial classes twice a week for 12 students who were below grade level in fractions; 9 of them cleared the next unit test |
| Did activities | Organised the school science exhibition with 30 student projects, and the inter-house quiz |
| Used smart class | Made slides and short videos for every chapter, and used Google Forms quizzes for homework checks |
| Exam duty | Set and moderated half-yearly question papers for Class VIII, using a blueprint of marks per chapter |
Only write results you can explain in an interview. "9 of 12 cleared the next unit test" is better than "improved results by 50%", because it is specific and you can talk about it. If you do not have a number, describe what you did clearly; that is fine.
Good action words for teachers: planned, taught, prepared, designed, set, checked, guided, mentored, organised, led, trained, started, improved, tracked, counselled.
If you have a gap, such as a year at home or a year preparing for exams, write it as one honest line with the dates: "2023 to 2024: Career break for family; taught home tuition to 6 students." A gap with an explanation is normal. A gap that the principal finds by doing their own sums is a worry.
Skills for a teacher resume
Do not write "hard-working, punctual, sincere". Every resume says that, and you show it in the interview. Instead, list skills a school can use, grouped so they are easy to read. Name the tools you have really used.
| Group | Examples |
|---|---|
| Classroom teaching | Lesson planning, activity-based learning, group work, classroom management, remedial teaching |
| Assessment | Question paper setting with a blueprint, formative assessment, rubrics, report cards |
| Subject | Lab work, map work, phonics, grammar, coding basics, mental maths |
| Digital | Smart board, Google Classroom or another learning app, Google Forms, slides, making short videos |
| Communication | Parent meetings, school assembly, writing circulars, counselling students |
| Language | Medium of teaching (write "can teach in"), and the other languages you speak |
| Extra duties | Sports, music, art, debate, NCC, Scouts and Guides, exam work |
Pick seven to ten skills that match the advert, not thirty. If the school asks for "experience with smart classes" and you have it, that skill goes first.
If you are not sure which of your teaching skills to put forward, our guide to teaching skills explains the main ones in plain words, and lesson plan format shows how to prepare the sample plan you may be asked for.
Teacher resume for freshers
A fresher has more to write than they think. If your B.Ed or D.El.Ed included school internship or practice teaching, that is real classroom work. Put it under "Teaching experience" with the school, classes, subject, dates and what you did, exactly as an experienced teacher would.
- School internship or practice teaching: school name, classes, subject, number of weeks, lessons taught.
- Micro-teaching and demo lessons in your course: the skills you practised. Our micro-teaching guide explains how to describe them.
- Home tuition or coaching: how many students, which classes, for how long.
- Volunteering: teaching at an NGO, a summer camp, a reading programme.
- College roles: class representative, event head, NSS volunteer, sports captain.
- Projects: an action research project, a teaching aid you made, a lesson video.
Keep a fresher resume to one page. Put eligibility first (degree, B.Ed or D.El.Ed with marks, CTET or TET), internship second, then skills and activities. A one-page resume that is full of real details beats a two-page resume full of general words.
If you have not yet passed CTET or TET and the post needs it, say when you will sit the exam: "CTET Paper II: appearing, next session." Do not write "qualified" until the result is out.
A full sample teacher resume you can copy
Here is a complete sample for a TGT English post, written as plain text so you can paste it into Word or Google Docs and replace each part with your own details. The person, schools and numbers are an example, not a real teacher.
| Part | Sample text |
|---|---|
| Header | Priya Sharma | Jaipur, Rajasthan | 98XXX XXXXX (WhatsApp) | priya.sharma.teacher@gmail.com |
| Post applied for | TGT English (Classes VI to X), CBSE |
| Profile | TGT English with M.A., B.Ed and CTET Paper II, teaching Classes VI to IX for 3 years in a CBSE school. I teach grammar through short daily writing and run the school's reading club. I want to build confident readers and writers at your school. |
| Eligibility | M.A. English, University of Rajasthan, 2021, 63% | B.A. (English, Political Science), 2019, 66% | B.Ed, NCTE-recognised college, 2022, 76% | CTET Paper II (Social Studies), qualified, 2022 |
| Experience 1 | TGT English, a CBSE senior secondary school, Jaipur | April 2023 to now | Classes VI to IX, 5 sections. Plan weekly lessons from the NCERT books and a reading list. Class teacher of VIII B: attendance, report cards, three parent meetings a year. Started a reading club of 25 students that meets every Saturday. Set half-yearly papers for Class VII using a marks blueprint. |
| Experience 2 | Home tuition | 2021 to 2023 | English and Social Science for 8 students of Classes VIII to X. |
| Internship | B.Ed school internship, a government senior secondary school, Jaipur | 16 weeks, 2022 | Taught English to Classes VI and VII; made picture cards for vocabulary. |
| Skills | Lesson planning | Grammar through writing | Reading programmes | Rubrics for writing | Question paper setting | Smart board and Google Classroom | Parent communication | Debate coaching |
| Training | Online courses on DIKSHA (list course names and year) | CBSE capacity-building workshop on assessment (year) | About 50 hours of CPD in 2025-26, with certificates |
| Activities | Ran the inter-house debate (2024, 2025) | Edited the school magazine (2025) |
| Languages | Can teach in English and Hindi |
| References | Principal, current school (name and phone on request) | B.Ed internship mentor (name, phone) |
Look at what the sample does: the post is on top, the eligibility can be checked in seconds, every line of experience says classes and what she did, and nothing in it is general praise. It fits on one page in a clean layout, and two pages at most.
Training and CPD: show that you keep learning
Schools now expect teachers to keep training, and a line on your resume shows it. The National Education Policy 2020 expects each teacher to take part in at least 50 hours of continuous professional development (CPD) every year, chosen by the teacher, covering areas such as foundational literacy and numeracy, formative assessment, competency-based learning and experiential learning, as the Ministry of Education told the Rajya Sabha in September 2020.
NCERT's guidelines for these 50 hours, published in August 2022, suggest that teachers keep an e-portfolio and update it with certificates or other evidence of their CPD, to be assessed at the end of the session by a head teacher or another notified authority. The same guidelines say that for NISHTHA online courses, a score of 70% or more in the course assessment is needed for a certificate.
For your resume, that means three things:
- Keep every certificate, with the course name, the body that ran it, the date and the hours.
- List the three to six most useful ones under "Training", newest first. Choose those that match the post.
- Write a short total: "CPD: about 50 hours in 2025-26", only if your certificates add up to it.
Format, length, file and sending
| Thing | Do this |
|---|---|
| Length | One page for freshers; two pages at most for experienced teachers |
| Font | One plain font, 10.5 to 12 point for text, slightly larger for headings |
| Layout | One column, clear headings, plenty of white space; avoid heavy colour and graphics |
| Dates | Month and year, newest job first |
| File type | PDF, unless the school asks for Word |
| File name | Name-Post-Subject.pdf, for example Priya-Sharma-TGT-English.pdf |
| Photo | Only if asked; recent, plain background |
Fancy two-column templates look nice but often break when a school opens them in another program or copies them into a form. A clean one-column resume is safer and easier to read on a phone, which is where many principals first see it.
A sample message to send with your resume
Many schools in India receive resumes by email or WhatsApp. Never send a file with no message. Use something like this, and change the details:
Subject: Application for TGT English, Priya Sharma. Respected Sir or Madam, I am applying for the post of TGT English advertised on your school website. I have an M.A. and B.Ed, have qualified CTET Paper II, and have taught Classes VI to IX in a CBSE school for 3 years. My resume is attached. I would be glad to give a demo class at a time that suits you. Thank you, Priya Sharma, phone number.
If you are called for an interview, read our teacher interview questions and answers and plan your demo class. Interview notices often ask you to bring documents too: the walk-in notice of one Kendriya Vidyalaya for 2026-27, for example, asked candidates to come with original documents, photocopies and passport-size photographs, after filling an online form on the samvida-sathi.kvs.gov.in portal.
Common teacher resume mistakes, and how to fix them
| Mistake | Why it hurts | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| No post or subject on top | The resume goes to the wrong pile or is skipped | Write "Post applied for" under your name |
| Marks missing | The school cannot check eligibility | Give the percentage for each degree |
| "CTET qualified" with no paper | Paper I and II are for different classes | Write the paper and subject |
| Duties, not results | Every teacher has the same duties | Say classes, numbers and what changed |
| Spelling mistakes | A teacher's resume is a writing sample | Read it aloud; ask a friend to check |
| One resume for every school | It does not match any advert well | Change the post, objective and top skills each time |
| Claims you cannot prove | Fails at the document check or interview | Write only what your papers show |
When a resume is not what you need
A resume is for schools, coaching institutes and companies that hire directly. It is not always the right tool.
- Government teacher recruitment, such as KVS, NVS or state recruitment, is done through online application forms and official notices. There you fill the form exactly as the notice says; a resume is not asked for and will not help.
- Colleges and universities expect a full academic CV with research, papers and conferences.
- If you teach on your own, through tuition or online, students and parents never read a resume. They read a teacher profile. Our guide on how to write a teacher profile covers that.
If you are looking for jobs, the National Career Service portal of the Ministry of Labour and Employment lists jobs, job fairs and an AI resume builder, and has a toll-free helpline, 1514.
You can also put your teaching where learners can find it. Sikhami is a social network for every kind of learning in India. There, a teacher gets a free profile, connects with institutes and learners, shares short clips and notes, and can earn from Super Chat, memberships and paid content. Coaching institutes on Sikhami get a free LMS with video courses, batches, attendance and fees, and can invite a teacher to teach on their courses. See Sikhami for teachers.

Frequently asked questions
What is the best format for a teacher resume in India?
A one-column format in this order: name and contact, post applied for, career objective, eligibility and qualifications with marks, teaching experience, skills, training, activities, languages and references. Keep it to one page as a fresher and two pages at most if you have experience, and send it as a PDF.
How do I write a teacher resume as a fresher?
Put your degree, B.Ed or D.El.Ed with marks, and CTET or TET first. Then write your school internship as teaching experience, with the school, classes, subject and weeks. Add tuition, volunteering and college roles, and keep it to one page.
What should I write in the career objective of a teacher resume?
Two or three lines: the post and subject, the classes and board, one strong proof such as years of experience or CTET, and what you will bring to that school. Change the last part for each school, using words from its advert.
Should I mention my CTET score on my resume?
You can. At least write the paper (Paper I for Classes I to V, Paper II for Classes VI to VIII), the subject and the year. The CTET bulletin says the qualifying certificate is valid for life and that you may sit the exam again to improve your score, so give your best score.
Do I need a photo on a teacher resume?
Only if the school asks for one. Some private schools in India still do. If you add a photo, use a recent passport-size photo with a plain background.
What skills should a teacher put on a resume?
Skills a school can use, grouped: classroom teaching (lesson planning, classroom management), assessment (paper setting, rubrics), subject skills, digital tools you have really used, communication with parents, the languages you can teach in, and extra duties such as sports or debate. Choose seven to ten that match the advert.
Do I need a resume for a government teacher job?
Usually not. Government recruitment such as KVS, NVS or state teacher recruitment is done through official online forms. Fill the form exactly as the notice says and keep your documents ready.
