If you are wondering which SSC CHSL jobs you can actually get, what each one pays and where you might be posted, this page answers all of it using the official notice for the 2026 cycle.

SSC put out the CHSL 2026 notice on 7 September 2026, with about 2,536 tentative vacancies that may change once departments confirm their needs. Here is each post, its full form, its work, its pay, the departments that hire and how promotions work.

The CHSL 2026 notice names only these posts. Every pay figure below is the basic pay range of the 7th Pay Commission pay matrix, as printed in the notice.

CHSL itself stands for Combined Higher Secondary Level. The notice's full title is the Combined Higher Secondary (10+2) Level Examination, 2026.

What happened to Postal Assistant and Sorting Assistant?

PA means Postal Assistant and SA means Sorting Assistant. Older CHSL cycles, such as the 2020 exam, recruited PA/SA at Pay Level 4, but they are not in the CHSL 2026 list. The CGL 2026 notice now lists PA/SA at Level 4, and CGL needs a degree, so plan for CGL if PA/SA is your goal.

SSC will publish post-wise and category-wise vacancies for CHSL 2026 on ssc.gov.in under the Tentative Vacancy section. Check it before you fill your post preferences.

What each CHSL job involves

LDC and JSA (Level 2)

Lower Division Clerk and Junior Secretariat Assistant are the same level of job under two titles. JSA is the title used in secretariat cadres such as the Central Secretariat Clerical Service; many other offices say LDC. The work is office support: maintaining files and registers, logging letters in and out, typing routine drafts and entering records in the office's computer systems.

Because typing is central to this job, the CHSL exam includes a typing test for LDC/JSA. You must type at 35 words per minute in English or 30 words per minute in Hindi, and the test lasts 10 minutes. Hindi typing must be done in the Mangal font.

DEO and DEO Grade A (Level 4 or 5)

Data Entry Operators enter, update and check data in government systems. Most DEO posts need a data entry speed of 8,000 key depressions per hour, tested over 15 minutes. DEO and DEO Grade A posts in the Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution, the Staff Selection Commission and the Ministry of Culture need 15,000 key depressions per hour, and for these posts you must have passed Class 12 in the science stream with mathematics.

LDC in the Border Roads Organisation

BRO vacancies are open only to men and come with a physical efficiency test and physical and medical standards, because staff may serve in remote, high-altitude areas. Read that annexure of the notice before choosing BRO; SSC will not change your post if you fail them.

SSC CHSL department list and posting location

These departments reported CHSL vacancies in the 2025 cycle, per the final breakdown published in June 2026. The 2026 list will differ somewhat, since each department reports its own needs every year.

  • Ministry of Defence offices: Border Roads Organisation, Canteen Stores Department, Controller General of Defence Accounts, Armed Forces Headquarters
  • Ministry of Home Affairs: Intelligence Bureau, Office of the Registrar General of India
  • Ministry of Finance: Controller General of Accounts, Department of Financial Services, Directorate of Enforcement
  • Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs
  • Central Bureau of Investigation and National Investigation Agency
  • Directorate General of Health Services
  • Archaeological Survey of India and Ministry of Culture
  • Election Commission of India, Central Administrative Tribunal, Department of Posts and Ministry of Labour and Employment

In that 2025 cycle, SSC reported 3,522 vacancies by June 2026, up from 3,131 at the time of the notice. Almost all were LDC/JSA posts: 3,396 by one published breakdown, against only 24 DEO and 13 DEO Grade A posts. So for most candidates, an SSC CHSL job means an LDC or JSA job.

Where will you be posted?

All CHSL posts carry all-India service liability, so you can be posted anywhere in the country. Your department may allot you a state, union territory or zone and may ask you to learn the local language before confirmation. SSC does not collect zone-wise vacancies; ask the department itself.

The 8th Central Pay Commission got its terms of reference in October 2025 and has 18 months from its constitution to report. Until new pay rules are notified, the 7th Pay Commission figures above are the ones that apply.

Which is the highest post in SSC CHSL?

By pay, the top CHSL post is a Data Entry Operator post placed at Level 5, which starts at a basic pay of Rs 29,200. Next come DEO and DEO Grade A posts at Level 4, then LDC/JSA at Level 2. There is no officer-rank post in CHSL; every post is Group C.

DEO vacancies are few and need fast, accurate data entry. SSC allots posts on merit plus the preferences you submit, and an allotted post is final, so rank preferences in the order you truly want them.

Promotions and career growth after CHSL

  • LDC/JSA to SSA/UDC: the next step is Senior Secretariat Assistant or Upper Division Clerk at Pay Level 4, by seniority or through a Limited Departmental Competitive Examination (LDCE). SSC's LDCE for SSA/UDC in the Central Secretariat Clerical Service required five years of approved service as an LDC as on 1 August 2025.
  • Higher grades: later promotions depend on your department's recruitment rules and further departmental exams.
  • MACP: if promotion does not come, the Modified Assured Career Progression scheme moves you to the next pay level after 10, 20 and 30 years of service, or after 10 years in the same level, whichever is earlier.
  • Probation: you serve two years on probation before confirmation.
  • Moving to CGL later: if you graduate while in service, you can take SSC CGL. Central government civilian employees with at least three years of regular service get an upper age limit of up to 40 years for Group C posts in CGL.
