SSC GD Salary 2026: Pay Level 3, In-hand Salary per Month and Force-wise Posts
Updated 10 October 2026 · Facts checked against the sources listed at the end
An SSC GD constable starts on a basic pay of Rs 21,700 a month in Pay Level 3 of the 7th Pay Commission pay matrix, a scale that runs up to Rs 69,100. The SSC GD 2026 notice puts every post at this one level: Constable (GD) in BSF, CISF, CRPF, ITBP, SSB and SSF, and Rifleman (GD) in Assam Rifles. So the basic salary is the same whichever force you are allotted.
With dearness allowance at 60% of basic pay since 1 January 2026, our calculation puts the first-year gross salary at about Rs 37,600 to Rs 47,000 a month, depending on the house rent and transport allowance of your posting. After the 10% pension deduction, the approximate in-hand salary is about Rs 34,100 to Rs 43,500 a month. These are our own estimates from official rates, shown step by step below, not figures published by SSC.
SSC GD salary at a glance
| Item | Amount | Where it comes from |
|---|---|---|
| Pay level | Level 3 | SSC GD 2026 notice |
| Pay scale | Rs 21,700 to Rs 69,100 | 7th CPC pay matrix, Level 3 |
| Starting basic pay | Rs 21,700 a month | First cell of Level 3 |
| Dearness allowance | Rs 13,020 a month | 60% of basic from 1 January 2026 |
| Approximate gross | Rs 37,600 to Rs 46,990 a month | Basic + DA + HRA + transport allowance |
| Approximate in-hand | Rs 34,128 to Rs 43,518 a month | Gross minus 10% NPS contribution |
The pay level is fixed by the notice. The allowances change with time and place: DA is revised by the Finance Ministry, and HRA and transport allowance depend on the city you are posted to and whether you live in government housing. That is why any honest in-hand figure is a range, not one number. On a yearly basis, the gross range above comes to roughly Rs 4.5 lakh to Rs 5.6 lakh in the first year by our arithmetic, before any DA rise.
SSC GD posts and salary, force by force
Every post in the SSC GD 2026 notice carries the same Pay Level 3. Here are the posts with their tentative 2026 vacancies, which show where most new constables actually go.
| Force | Post | Pay level | Vacancies |
|---|---|---|---|
| BSF | Constable (GD) | Level 3 | 524 / 92 / 616 |
| CISF | Constable (GD) | Level 3 | 13,135 / 1,460 / 14,595 |
| CRPF | Constable (GD) | Level 3 | 5,366 / 124 / 5,490 |
| SSB | Constable (GD) | Level 3 | 1,764 / 0 / 1,764 |
| ITBP | Constable (GD) | Level 3 | 1,099 / 194 / 1,293 |
| Assam Rifles | Rifleman (GD) | Level 3 | 1,556 / 150 / 1,706 |
| SSF | Constable (GD) | Level 3 | 23 / 0 / 23 |
| Total | 23,467 / 2,020 / 25,487 |
These vacancies are tentative and can change. State-wise and category-wise figures are on ssc.gov.in under Tentative Vacancy.
Same pay, different work
- BSF guards India's borders with Pakistan and Bangladesh.
- CISF protects industrial units, airports and other key public installations. It had the most GD vacancies in 2026.
- CRPF handles internal security, such as law and order duties and operations against insurgency.
- ITBP guards the border with China, much of it in high mountains.
- SSB guards the open borders with Nepal and Bhutan.
- Assam Rifles serves mainly in the North-East and along the border with Myanmar.
- SSF, the Secretariat Security Force, is a small force guarding government buildings; its vacancies are filled on an all-India basis.
Basic pay and DA do not change with the force, but where you serve does change some allowances. A posting in a big city brings higher HRA and transport allowance, while field postings come with their own rules for housing and allowances.
What about NCB Sepoy salary?
The SSC GD 2026 notice has no Narcotics Control Bureau posts. The previous cycle, GD 2025, did include 22 Sepoy posts in NCB, and they were at Pay Level 1 (Rs 18,000 to Rs 56,900), lower than the Level 3 of the GD posts. If NCB posts return in the 2027 notice, check the pay level printed against them before you rank your preferences.
SSC GD salary per month: in-hand calculation
Here is how a first-year constable's monthly pay adds up at the official rates in force on 10 October 2026. We show four cases because HRA depends on the city class of your posting and is not paid if you live in government accommodation.
| Component | X city (e.g. Delhi) | Y city | Z city | Government housing |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Basic pay | 21,700 | 21,700 | 21,700 | 21,700 |
| DA at 60% | 13,020 | 13,020 | 13,020 | 13,020 |
| HRA | 6,510 (30%) | 4,340 (20%) | 2,170 (10%) | 0 |
| Transport allowance with DA | 5,760 | 2,880 | 2,880 | 2,880 |
| Gross | 46,990 | 41,940 | 39,770 | 37,600 |
| NPS (10% of basic + DA) | 3,472 | 3,472 | 3,472 | 3,472 |
| Approximate in-hand | 43,518 | 38,468 | 36,298 | 34,128 |
Our approximate calculation, not an SSC figure. Transport allowance for Levels 3 to 8 is Rs 3,600 plus DA in a list of bigger cities (such as Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Patna, Lucknow and Jaipur) and Rs 1,800 plus DA elsewhere. We used the higher rate only for the X city; a Y city on that list, such as Patna or Lucknow, would add Rs 2,880 more. Income tax, group insurance, welfare fund and mess deductions are not included.
The government also puts 14% of your basic pay plus DA into your NPS account every month, about Rs 4,861 at the first stage by our arithmetic. It does not appear in your in-hand pay, but it is part of what you earn.
How SSC GD salary grows: the Level 3 pay matrix
Level 3 has 40 cells, from Rs 21,700 to Rs 69,100. Each annual increment moves you to the next cell. The table shows the first five years at today's DA rate.
| Cell | Basic pay | DA at 60% | Basic + DA |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 (on joining) | Rs 21,700 | Rs 13,020 | Rs 34,720 |
| 2 | Rs 22,400 | Rs 13,440 | Rs 35,840 |
| 3 | Rs 23,100 | Rs 13,860 | Rs 36,960 |
| 4 | Rs 23,800 | Rs 14,280 | Rs 38,080 |
| 5 | Rs 24,500 | Rs 14,700 | Rs 39,200 |
| 40 (top of Level 3) | Rs 69,100 | Rs 41,460 | Rs 1,10,560 |
DA does not stay still. The latest Finance Ministry order, dated 22 April 2026, raised it from 58% to 60% of basic pay with effect from 1 January 2026. We found no order for a revision from July 2026 when we checked on 10 October 2026, so the real figures will move up once the next order comes.
Allowances and benefits of an SSC GD constable
- Dearness allowance: 60% of basic pay from 1 January 2026.
- House rent allowance: 30%, 20% or 10% of basic pay in X, Y and Z cities now that DA has crossed 50%, with a minimum of Rs 5,400, Rs 3,600 and Rs 1,800 a month respectively. Whether you get it depends on your posting and housing.
- Transport allowance: Rs 3,600 plus DA a month in the listed bigger cities and Rs 1,800 plus DA elsewhere, for Pay Levels 3 to 8.
- Ration money allowance: non-gazetted CAPF personnel are paid this allowance. A Railway Board order of 5 May 2025, which pays RPF staff at par with CAPF personnel, set it at Rs 150.04 per head per day for April 2024 to March 2025, about Rs 4,500 for a 30-day month by our arithmetic. We could not find a later official rate.
- Pension: new central government recruits come under the National Pension System, where you contribute 10% of basic pay plus DA and the government 14%. In January 2023 the Delhi High Court held that the old pension scheme applies to CAPF personnel, but the Supreme Court stayed that order in July 2023, so the question is still before the courts.
- Financial upgradation (MACP): if you are not promoted in time, the scheme gives three upgradations to the next higher pay level, after 10, 20 and 30 years of regular service. The Supreme Court has applied it to CAPF personnel.
Allowances for hard and risky postings
When the government accepted the 7th Pay Commission's allowance package in June 2017, it placed the allowances for risky and difficult postings of civilians, CAPF and defence personnel in a single Risk and Hardship Matrix. For CAPF personnel this covers high altitude allowance, field area allowance (with field areas classified by the Ministry of Home Affairs) and counter-insurgency operations allowance. CAPF personnel serving in field, high-altitude or counter-insurgency postings were also given one extra free railway warrant for leave travel.
We have not put amounts on these allowances, because the rate depends on the exact cell of the matrix your posting falls in, and the rates have been revised since 2017. A constable posted to such an area can earn noticeably more than the table above, and your force's pay office will have the current rates.
Promotions and career growth
In most CAPFs, a GD constable moves up through the ranks of Head Constable, Assistant Sub-Inspector, Sub-Inspector and Inspector, while Assam Rifles uses army-style rank names such as Havildar and Subedar. Promotion depends on each force's rules, vacancies, service record and courses, so the timing differs between forces and even between batches. MACP is the safety net when promotion is slow.
There are other routes too. SSC holds a separate Sub-Inspector in Delhi Police and CAPFs examination; its 2026 CBE is scheduled from 20 to 28 November 2026. And if you have passed Class 12, compare GD with SSC CHSL, whose Lower Division Clerk and Junior Secretariat Assistant posts start one level lower, at Pay Level 2 (Rs 19,900), but in desk jobs.
Is the SSC GD salary worth it?
For a job open to Class 10 pass candidates aged 18 to 23 (as on 1 January 2026, before category relaxations), Level 3 is a solid start: a central government salary with DA that rises over time, a pension contribution from the government and job security. The trade-offs are real too: postings can be anywhere in India, often far from home, and field duty is demanding.
Selection is decided by your CBE score, and the force you get depends on that score and your preferences. A higher score also gives you a better chance at the force you rank first. Frequently asked questions
What is the SSC GD salary per month?
SSC GD constables are in Pay Level 3, with a starting basic pay of Rs 21,700. With DA at 60% from 1 January 2026, HRA and transport allowance, our approximate gross works out to about Rs 37,600 to Rs 46,990 a month, depending on the posting.
What is the in-hand salary of an SSC GD constable?
By our calculation, about Rs 34,100 to Rs 43,500 a month in the first year after the 10% NPS deduction. The lower end is for someone in government housing outside the big cities, and the upper end for a posting in an X city such as Delhi. Income tax and small deductions are not included.
Is the salary the same in BSF, CISF and CRPF?
Yes. The SSC GD 2026 notice puts all posts, in BSF, CISF, CRPF, ITBP, SSB, SSF and Assam Rifles, at Pay Level 3 (Rs 21,700 to Rs 69,100). Only posting-linked allowances such as HRA, transport allowance and special-area allowances differ.
What is the salary of NCB Sepoy through SSC GD?
NCB Sepoy posts are not part of the SSC GD 2026 notice. In GD 2025 they were offered at Pay Level 1 (Rs 18,000 to Rs 56,900). Check the 2027 notice to see whether they return and at what level.
Do SSC GD constables get a pension?
New recruits are covered by the National Pension System, with 10% of basic pay plus DA from the employee and 14% from the government. The Delhi High Court ruled in 2023 that CAPF personnel should get the old pension scheme, but the Supreme Court stayed that ruling, and the matter is still pending.
Does SSC GD salary increase every year?
Yes. An annual increment moves your basic pay to the next cell of Level 3, for example from Rs 21,700 to Rs 22,400. DA is also revised from time to time; it went from 58% to 60% from 1 January 2026.
