Free Student Attendance App for Teachers and Coaching Institutes
Updated 12 October 2026
Sikhami is a free student attendance app for teachers and coaching institutes. For every class you mark each student present, late or absent with a tap, note the topic you taught, and see your institute's attendance over the last 30 days on the dashboard. It works in the Android app and on the website, and it costs nothing.
It is made for tuition teachers and coaching institutes that teach in batches, whether one teacher marks every class or several teachers share the work. This page explains how attendance works on Sikhami, who marks it, what students see and what it does not do yet. It also answers the common questions about taking attendance online, and gives a simple routine for marking it quickly and fairly, whichever app or register you use. Attendance is one part of Sikhami's free LMS for coaching institutes.
What you get, free
Attendance comes with batches, the weekly timetable and the rest of a free institute on Sikhami. There is no plan to upgrade to and no limit on the number of batches or students.
| Part | What you get |
|---|---|
| Batches | Each batch with its own students, teachers, seats and weekly timetable, taught in class, online or hybrid |
| Marking | Present, late or absent for every student in every class, a tap each, with the topic taught |
| Late | Recorded separately, and counted as present in the totals |
| Who marks | You, your admins, and the teachers assigned to that batch |
| Past classes | A batch's earlier classes, listed under Past classes |
| Dashboard | Attendance over the last 30 days, with Classes today, Students in batches and Active batches |
| Students | Each student added by Sikhami username sees their own attendance percentage under My batches |
| Where it works | The Android app and the website |
How attendance works in a batch
On Sikhami, attendance belongs to a batch. Create a batch with a name, where classes happen (in class, online or hybrid), the classroom address or a live class link for Google Meet or Zoom, start and end dates, seats, the teachers for the batch and a weekly timetable, built one slot at a time with + Add a class time. The Timetable shows the week as a grid.
Then add your students to the batch. Marking a class takes one tap per student:
- Open the batch from Batches in your institute, on the website or in the Android app.
- Tap P, L or A against each student: present, late or absent.
- Write what you covered in Topic taught (optional), for example Quadratic equations, exercise 4.2.
- Earlier classes stay listed under Past classes, so you can look back at any of them.
Late counts as present in the totals, so a student who walks in ten minutes late is not marked absent, yet the record still shows they were late. The topic gives you a running log of what each batch has covered, which helps when a student misses a week or another teacher takes the class.
An attendance app for teachers, not only for the owner
You decide who marks attendance. As the owner you can mark any batch. Add staff by their exact Sikhami username and give each a role:
- Admin: runs batches, students, attendance and fees.
- Teacher: marks attendance for the batches they are assigned to. Teachers cannot edit batches on the website.
Because each teacher marks the batches they take, attendance gets taken in every class, without one person collecting registers at the end of the day. There is also an accountant role, for fees rather than attendance; our fee management software page covers it.
What you and your students see
On the institute Dashboard, Attendance, 30 days shows how your batches have attended over the last month, next to Classes today, Students in batches and Active batches. If the figure drops, open your batches and look back through their past classes.
Students see their own record. A student you add to a batch by their Sikhami username sees their attendance percentage, along with their fee status, under My batches. They see the percentage, not a day-by-day list.
Because it all runs on the website and in the Android app, a teacher can mark attendance on a phone in the classroom while you check the dashboard from home.
How to take attendance in a coaching class quickly and fairly
Good attendance depends less on the app and more on a routine that every teacher follows the same way. This works for a paper register, a spreadsheet or any attendance app.
Make it quick
- Mark in the first five minutes of the class, not at the end of the day from memory. Registers filled in later are where most mistakes come from.
- Go through the students in the same order every time, such as the seating plan or the batch list, so a class of thirty takes a minute or two.
- Use only three marks: present, late and absent. Ticks, crosses and notes in the margin make the totals hard to trust.
- Write the topic in one line. It takes seconds and turns the register into a record of what was taught.
Keep it fair
- Agree a late rule and announce it, for example that arriving after the first ten minutes is late. Put it on the notice board or the admission form and apply it to every student.
- If lateness becomes a habit, talk to the student and the parent rather than quietly turning lates into absences.
- Holidays and classes you cancel should never count against a student. In a paper register, mark the whole batch H for that day so it drops out of the percentage.
- Make-up or extra classes count like any other class for the batch that attends them.
- Count late joiners from their first class, not from the day the batch started.
- Leave with a reason is still an absence. Mark it absent and note the reason, so the count stays honest and you can explain it to a parent.
Attendance in online classes
For a class on Google Meet or Zoom, mark attendance from the list of who has joined, about five minutes after the start, and keep the same late rule as in the classroom. A student who joins with the camera off and never speaks is hard to count, so decide in advance whether each student should answer once or unmute to say present, and tell the batch. In a long class, a second quick check near the end shows who left early. On Sikhami, an online or hybrid batch is marked in exactly the same way as a classroom batch, and the batch keeps its Meet or Zoom link.
Work out the percentage the same way every month
Attendance percentage = (classes present + classes late) divided by (classes present + late + absent), multiplied by 100, with holidays left out. A student who was present 20 times, late twice and absent three times attended 22 out of 25 classes, which is 88 percent.
Look at the numbers once a week. A student who has been slipping for two weeks is worth a call home now, not at the end of the term. Share attendance with each family privately, never in a batch group. If you prefer paper, or want a backup, our free attendance register format uses the same marks, with an Excel sheet that does the counting.
Good to know before you start
- Parents have no login, and Sikhami sends no attendance alerts or reminders to parents. Tell families yourself; our WhatsApp messages for tuition classes include an absence note to parents in English and Hindi.
- Students see their attendance percentage, not a day-by-day record.
- Attendance is marked by you, your admins or the batch's teachers. Teachers cannot edit batches on the website; you or an admin set them up.
- Students are added to a batch by hand; there is no bulk import from a spreadsheet.
- Online classes run on Google Meet or Zoom through the batch's live class link; Sikhami does not host them.
Frequently asked questions
How do I take student attendance online?
Use an app that keeps a list of each batch and lets you mark every student for each class. On Sikhami, open the batch on the website or in the Android app, tap P, L or A for each student and add the topic taught. For a class on Google Meet or Zoom, mark it from the list of who joined, in the same way.
What is the best app for tracking attendance?
The right one is the app your teachers will actually use in every class. Look for quick marking on a phone, a separate mark for late, roles so each teacher marks their own batches, a percentage students can see, and a clear price. Sikhami is a free option for coaching institutes and tuition teachers that does these, on Android and the website.
What is the best way to track student attendance?
Mark it at the start of every class, in the same order, with the same three marks: present, late and absent. Leave holidays out, agree a late rule in advance, and look at each student's percentage every month. A routine that every teacher follows matters more than the tool.
What is the best mobile attendance app?
One that works on the phones your teachers already carry and needs one tap per student. Sikhami's attendance works in the Android app and on the website, it is free, and each teacher marks only the batches assigned to them.
Is Sikhami's attendance app free?
Yes. Batches, the timetable, attendance, the fee book and staff roles are free, with no subscription. Sikhami earns only when a learner buys a paid video course online, by keeping a share of that sale.
Can parents see their child's attendance on Sikhami?
No. Parents have no login and get no notifications. A student added to a batch by their Sikhami username sees their own attendance percentage under My batches, and you can share attendance with parents yourself.
