SSC CGL 2026 at a glance

The 2026 exam is still running. On 10 October 2026, Tier 1 is in progress, so there are no 2026 results, cut-offs or final vacancies yet. Watch ssc.gov.in (For Candidates, then Tentative Vacancy) for updates.

SSC CGL posts by pay level: the quick view

The notice sorts every post into one of five pay levels of the 7th Pay Commission pay matrix. The basic pay range for each level is printed in the notice, and the lower figure is what you start on. Your take-home pay is higher because dearness allowance, house rent allowance and transport allowance are added, and those depend on your city and on DA revisions.

Level 7 has the largest share of the 2026 vacancies, mostly because CBIC alone has asked for 2,366 Inspectors (Central Excise).

These are the posts SSC says are likely to be filled through CGL 2026. Being on this list does not guarantee vacancies this year; the next section shows which posts actually have vacancies in the 24 September list. Age limits are counted as on 1 August 2026.

SSC CGL vacancy 2026 post wise (tentative, as on 24 September 2026)

The notice said there were about 12,256 vacancies. On 24 September 2026 SSC published its post-wise tentative list, and the total came down to 10,731 across 59 post and department entries. SSC itself says final vacancies may differ, and it does not collect state-wise or zone-wise numbers; for those you have to ask the department concerned.

Several posts named in the notice have no vacancies in this list: Postal or Sorting Assistant, Sub Inspector in NIA, Inspector in CBN, Divisional Accountant, Research Assistant in NHRC, Section Head in DGFT, Senior Administrative Assistant in MES, and Auditor posts outside CGDA. A department can still report vacancies later, so check the updated list before you fill your preferences.

For comparison, the previous cycle, CGL 2025, ended with 15,118 final vacancies according to SSC's first-round allocation notice of 8 April 2026.

What is B33 in SSC CGL? Post codes explained

When SSC asks for your post preferences, every post and department pair has a short code. SSC uses the same codes in its allocation results and cut-off tables. Codes are set for each exam cycle, so the same code can mean a different post in another year. The CGL 2026 notice does not print any codes; the 2026 codes will appear with the 2026 option form.

In CGL 2025, B33 was Office Superintendent in the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT), Ministry of Finance, according to SSC's first-round allocation notice. It was by far the biggest entry that year, with 6,626 of the 15,118 vacancies. If an older website calls B33 something else, it is probably using another year's list. In CGL 2026, Office Superintendent in CBDT is a Level 6 post with 426 tentative vacancies.

The 2025 codes ran in one sequence from B01 to D57. Looking at that list, B codes were Group B posts such as inspectors, ASOs and assistants, C36 and C37 were the two statistics posts, and D codes were Group C posts such as auditors, accountants, UDCs and tax assistants. SSC's notice does not define the letters, so treat this as a pattern rather than a rule.

SSC CGL work profile: what the popular posts actually do

Assistant Section Officer (ASO)

ASOs run the paperwork of a ministry: they examine files, draft notes and letters, keep records and help officers prepare policy and parliamentary replies. CSS ASOs can be placed in any ministry that is part of the Central Secretariat, mostly in Delhi, while IB, Railways, MEA and AFHQ have their own cadres. It is an office job with fixed hours and a clear promotion ladder.

Inspector of Income Tax (CBDT)

Income Tax Inspectors support assessing officers. The work includes verifying returns and records, field enquiries, surveys, TDS checks and serving notices. Expect a mix of desk work and visits.

Inspector in CBIC: Central Excise, Preventive Officer and Examiner

An Inspector (Central Excise) now works mostly on GST and central excise: registrations, return scrutiny, audits and anti-evasion work. A Preventive Officer works in customs at ports, airports and land borders, checking passengers and cargo and acting against smuggling. An Examiner checks and values imported and exported goods at customs. All three need computer proficiency and have physical standards.

Assistant Audit Officer and Assistant Accounts Officer

These are the only gazetted posts in CGL. AAOs audit the accounts of government offices and public sector bodies under the C&AG, while Assistant Accounts Officers handle state government accounts. During probation you must pass the Subordinate Audit or Accounts Service Examination to be confirmed. Postings depend on your merit and state preference.

Sub Inspector in CBI, NIA and NCB

These are investigation jobs: collecting evidence, recording statements, raids and court work. They suit people who want field work and can handle irregular hours, and they carry physical and vision standards.

Junior Statistical Officer and Statistical Investigator Grade II

JSOs work in MoSPI on surveys and data, and Statistical Investigators work with the Registrar General of India on census-related statistics. Both need a separate Tier 2 statistics paper, and their merit is calculated separately from other posts.

Auditor, Accountant and Tax Assistant

Auditors and Accountants (Level 5) maintain and check government accounts, for example in defence accounts offices under CGDA. Tax Assistants (Level 4) do data entry and office work in Income Tax and GST offices, which is why SSC sets a higher typing-speed standard for them.

How SSC decides which post you get

• Posts are allotted on merit plus the order of preference you give in SSC's online option form, which is taken before the result. If you do not choose a post, you will not be considered for it.
• Final merit is based on Tier 2 only. Tier 1 is for shortlisting.
• JSO and Statistical Investigator need Paper II of Tier 2, and AAO and Assistant Accounts Officer need Paper III.
• Some posts set a higher standard in the computer test and typing test, including ASO in CSS, MEA and AFHQ, the CBIC Inspectors, Executive Assistant and Postal Assistant. Tax Assistants and UDC in CBN have a higher typing test standard.
• If you are allotted a post and then fail its physical, medical or educational standard, SSC will not shift you to another post. Pick posts you are sure you qualify for.

Is this every SSC job? Other SSC exams
