Course tests and certificates
Add multiple-choice tests to a video course, set the pass mark and time limit, see how students did, and let students who finish earn a certificate anyone can verify.
Updated 22 October 2026
A test is a set of multiple-choice questions inside a video course. You put it in a section, between lectures, like a chapter test. Students take it on Sikhami and get their score straight away.
A certificate of completion is a page with a code that proves a student finished your course. Students earn it when they finish every lecture and pass every test. This article is for teachers; for the student side, see Course certificates.
Add a test
- Open your course from My courses in the Learning studio and go to the Curriculum tab.
- In the section where the test should go, click Add test. A test called "Test" is added at the end of the section and the Edit test window opens.
- Fill in the test (see below) and click Save test.
Tests can be added only to video courses, because only video courses have a curriculum. The test shows in the section with a test icon. Use Move up and Move down to place it between the right lectures.
Fill in the test
- Title: the name students see, for example "Chapter 1 test".
- Instructions (optional): anything students should know before they start.
- Pass mark (%): the score a student needs to pass, from 0 to 100. A new test starts at 60.
- Time limit (minutes): from 0 to 600. 0 means no time limit. When time runs out, the student's answers are submitted on their own.
- Question: the text of each question.
- Options: tick the circle next to the right answer. Each question starts with four options. You can have from two to six; use + Add option to add one and the cross to remove one.
- Explanation (shown after submitting): why the answer is right. Students see it only after they submit.
Click Add question to add another question. Use Move up, Move down and Delete question on each question. A test must keep at least one question.
You cannot save the test until every question has text, at least two filled-in options and a right answer ticked. The message tells you which question needs fixing.
To change a test later, click its pencil (Edit test) in the curriculum. To remove it, click Delete lecture; the test and its questions are removed for everyone.
How tests are marked
- Each question is worth the same. The score is the share of right answers, shown as a percentage.
- A student passes when their score is at or above the pass mark.
- The right answers are kept on Sikhami's server and are never sent to students' devices before they submit, so they cannot be read from the page.
- After submitting, students see their score, which answers were right, and your explanations.
- Students can retake a test as often as they like. Passing it marks it as done in their progress.
- You can try your own test from the course's lecture page (Watch as a student). Your attempts are not saved.
See how students did
Open the Analytics tab of the course. The Tests table shows, for each test, how many students Took it, how many Passed, the average best score (Avg best) and the number of Attempts. The student list shows how many tests each student passed, and you can download it with CSV.
Certificates of completion
In the Curriculum tab, the Certificate of completion box is ticked for every new course. While it is ticked, a student can claim a certificate once they have:
- finished every video lecture in the course, and
- passed every test in the course.
If something is missing, the student is told how many lectures or tests are left. A certificate has its own code, starting with SKM, and its own page that anyone can open to check that it is real. It shows the student's name, the course name, your institute's name, the number of lectures and tests passed, the total length of the course, the date it was issued and the code.
- To stop giving certificates, untick Certificate of completion. Students can then no longer claim one. Certificates already issued are not removed.
- Each student gets one certificate per course. If they claim again, they get the same one.
- You cannot get a certificate for your own course.
The Edit tab also has a switch called Certificate on completion, under Discovery. That switch only tells students in search filters that your course gives a certificate. It does not turn certificates on or off. Keep the two settings the same so students are not misled.
Plan your tests well
- Add your tests before students start finishing the course. If you add a test later, a student who has not claimed a certificate yet must pass the new test before they can claim one.
- Write an explanation for every question. Students learn most from the explanation of a wrong answer.
- Set a time limit only if timing matters, for example to practise for an exam.
- Keep the pass mark the same across similar tests, so students know what to expect.
Questions
Can I add tests to a classroom (face-to-face) course?
No. Tests live in the curriculum, and only video courses have one.
Can students see the answers before they submit?
No. The answer key stays on Sikhami's server. Students see the right answers and your explanations only after they submit.
How many times can a student take a test?
As many times as they like. Their best score counts in your analytics, and passing once is enough for the certificate.
What pass mark should I set?
Any whole number from 0 to 100. A new test starts at 60.
Can I take back a certificate?
The website has no way to cancel a certificate that was already issued. Turning off Certificate of completion only stops new ones.
Do co-teachers get to edit tests?
Yes. Teachers who accepted a request to teach the course can work on the curriculum, including tests.
