Voice and video calls
How to make and answer audio and video calls with another member on sikhami.com, switch to video, share your screen, and see your call history.
Updated 22 October 2026
You can call another member from your one-to-one chat with them. A call can be audio only, or video with your camera. Sikhami does not charge for calls; they use your internet connection.
Calls are only between two people. Club and meetup chats have no call buttons. To talk with a group by voice, use a study room.
Before you start
- You need a microphone, and for a video call, a camera or webcam.
- The first time you call or answer, your browser asks to use your microphone (and camera for video). Choose Allow. If you refuse, you see "Allow camera and microphone access to make calls."
- Your browser must support calls. If it does not, you see "Calls are not supported in this browser". Try another, up-to-date browser.
Make a call
- Open your chat with the person. Go to Messages, or open their profile and tap Message.
- At the top right of the chat, tap the phone icon (Audio call) or the camera icon (Video call).
- The call screen opens and you hear a ringing sound. It shows Calling…, then Ringing… when the other person's device rings.
- When they answer, it shows Connecting… and then a timer.
You do not need to send a message before calling. You can also call from Audio call and Video call in Chat info, and from your call history.
| Message | What it means |
|---|---|
| No answer | Nobody answered within 60 seconds. The call stopped. |
| Call declined | The other person declined the call. |
| (Name) is busy on another call | The other person is already on a call. |
| You are already on a call | You can only be on one call at a time. |
| Connection failed | The call could not connect or the connection broke. Try again. |
Answer a call
When someone calls you while sikhami.com is open, a box appears at the bottom of the screen with their name and Incoming audio call or Incoming video call. A ringtone plays. Tap Accept to answer or Decline to say no.
The website rings only while sikhami.com is open in your browser and you are logged in. Browser notifications do not ring for calls. If the site is closed, the call is missed. Calls also ring in the Sikhami Android app.
If someone calls you while you are already on a call, they are told that you are busy.
During a call
| Button | What it does |
|---|---|
| Mute / Unmute | Turns your microphone off and on. |
| Camera off / Camera on | Turns your camera off and on (video calls). |
| Switch camera | Changes to your other camera, such as the front or back camera of a phone (video calls). |
| Video | In an audio call, asks the other person to switch to video. |
| Share screen / Stop sharing | Shows your screen to the other person. Only in browsers that allow it, once the call is connected. |
| End | Hangs up. |
When the other person asks to switch to video, you see "(Name) wants to switch to video" with Not now and Turn on camera. If they say no to your request, you see "Video request declined".
If the connection drops for a moment, the screen shows Reconnecting…. Closing the tab or the browser ends the call.
Call history
To see your calls, open More (on a phone: your profile, then ⋯), choose Settings & privacy, then Calls ("Audio and video call history"). It opens the Calls page.
- It lists your last 25 calls, newest first.
- Each row shows the person, an arrow for outgoing or incoming, the type of call and how long it lasted (for example Audio call · 3:05), and the date and time.
- Missed calls are shown in red, for example Missed video call. Other rows can say declined, cancelled or busy.
- Tap the phone or camera icon on the right of a row to call back.
Every call also leaves a line in your chat (📞 Call), and the chat list shows how the last call ended, such as 📞 Missed call, 📞 Declined call or 📞 Video call.
Privacy and safety
Only you and the other person are in a call. There is no button to record a call on the website.
Anyone you can chat with can call you. If someone calls you to bother you, decline the call, then report and block them. See Block someone and Report content.
Common problems
- The other person cannot hear or see me. Check that your browser is allowed to use the microphone and camera for sikhami.com, and that no other app is using them. Check that you are not on Mute or Camera off.
- I did not hear a call. The website rings only while sikhami.com is open. Keep a tab open, or use the Sikhami Android app.
- The call keeps failing. Move to a stronger internet connection and try again.
- I cannot find an old call. The history shows only your last 25 calls.
