Host a study room
Start a live voice room to study together: choose a topic, a length, seats and an optional entry fee, decide who speaks, hand over hosting, and end the room. Also how room recordings work.
Updated 22 October 2026
A study room is a live voice room. You talk, other people listen, and some of them can speak too. Everyone in the room can also write in the room chat and ask doubts. A room runs for a fixed time that you choose, and then it ends by itself.
This article is for hosts. To find and join rooms, see Study rooms.
Start a room
Open Create and choose Study room, or open Study rooms and select New room. The New study room form opens.
- Type a Room name (up to 60 characters).
- Choose a Topic: GK & Current Affairs, Quantitative Aptitude, English Language, Reasoning, Mixed / General or Custom.
- Optional: write what you will discuss (up to 200 characters).
- Optional: open Who is this room for? and pick a Language, a Session type, a Level and topics under What will you study?. These help people filter rooms.
- Choose a Duration: 30 minutes, 1 hour, 2 hours or 3 hours.
- Set Max members (how many people can be in the room; it starts at 15) and Speaker slots (incl. you) (how many people can talk; it starts at 2).
- Optional: set an Entry fee (₹, 0 = free).
- Optional: turn on Private room (joined with a 6-character code).
- Select Start room. The room opens, and you are the host.
The duration, the entry fee and the Who is this room for? details are fixed once you select Start room. You cannot change them later.
Free, private and paid rooms
- Free public room: listed on the Study rooms page under Live, with the busiest rooms first. Anyone can join while there are free seats.
- Private room: not listed. People join with the 6-character code or the invite link. Select the share button at the top of the room to send an invite; for a private room the invite includes the code. Others can also open Study rooms, select Join with code and type it.
- Paid room: people pay the entry fee before they enter. The entry lasts while the room is running, and there is no refund if it ends early. The fee comes in fixed steps (the lowest is ₹25), and the line under the fee box shows what you receive per member on sikhami.com and in the Android app.
For a paid room, Sikhami keeps a fee of 20% of the money that reaches it and pays you the rest. See What you earn on Sikhami.
Run the room
The room screen shows On stage (you and the speakers) and Listening (everyone else). The top shows the topic, the time left and a bar of the time used. Everyone gets a message when 5 minutes are left.
Your microphone
Select Unmute to talk and Mute to stop. The first time, your browser asks for microphone access. Allow it, or you cannot speak.
Let people speak
Listeners select Raise hand to ask to speak. The hand button in your bottom bar shows how many hands are up. Select it to open Speak requests, then choose Let speak or Deny for each person. A person can come on stage only while a speaker slot is free.
Manage a person
Select a person's picture to open their options. You can also drag a person onto the stage, back to the listeners, or onto Mute or Remove.
| Option | What it does |
|---|---|
| View profile | Opens their profile. |
| Invite to stage | Makes a listener a speaker, if a speaker slot is free. |
| Move to listeners | Takes a speaker off the stage. |
| Mute mic or Mute | Cuts a speaker's microphone, or stops a listener from raising a hand. They see Muted by host. |
| Allow mic or Allow to speak | Undoes the mute. |
| Remove from room | They leave at once and cannot come back to this room. |
Chat and doubts
On wide screens the room chat is beside the stage; on phones, select Chat. Anyone in the room can send a message, or tick Ask as a doubt to ask a question that others can upvote and answer. The person who asked, or the host, can choose Mark as answer on a reply or Mark solved on the doubt. As host you can also delete messages.
Leave, hand over or end the room
Select Leave at the bottom. As host you see Leave or end the room?
- To leave but keep the room going, choose who hosts while you are away, or keep Automatic (the person who joined next). Then select Leave and confirm. If you are the room's owner, you become host again when you come back while the room is open.
- To close the room for everyone, select End room and confirm. Everyone is disconnected.
- If nobody else is in the room, leaving ends it.
If you close the browser tab, hosting passes to another person in the room. When the time you chose runs out, the room ends by itself. If someone's connection is lost for about five minutes, Sikhami takes them out of the room.
Recordings
When you host from the website, your browser records the room's sound while it runs. Everyone in the room sees a Rec label at the top. There is no switch to turn recording off. Rooms hosted from the Android app are not recorded.
- Free public room: after the room ends, the recording is listed on the Study rooms page under Recordings and on the Listen back shelf. Anyone can play it, with the room's doubts below it.
- Paid room: the recording is private. Only you, the room's owner, can play it.
- Private room: the recording is not listed under Recordings.
The recording is saved in parts of 3 minutes while the room runs. If your tab closes suddenly, the last few minutes may be lost.
Delete a recording
- Open the ended room from My rooms on the Study rooms page.
- Select Delete recording.
- Confirm with Delete.
The sound is removed for everyone. The room and its doubts stay.
Your rooms
Every room you own or host, running or ended, is under My rooms on the Study rooms page and under My study rooms in the Creator studio.
Questions
Can I change the time or the fee after the room starts?
No. The duration, the entry fee and the Who is this room for? details are fixed when you select Start room.
How do I invite people to a private room?
Select the share button at the top of the room. The invite has the room name, the topic, the code and a link. People can also select Join with code on the Study rooms page and type the code.
Can someone I removed come back?
No. A person you remove cannot join that room again.
Do people who paid get a refund if the room ends early?
No. Before paying, people are told that entry lasts while the room is running and that there is no refund if it ends early.
Why can people not hear me?
Check that you are on stage and that the button at the bottom says Mute, which means your microphone is on. Also check that your browser allows microphone access for Sikhami.
What happens if I lose my connection?
Hosting passes to another person in the room. If you are the owner and come back while the room is still open, you become host again.
