Your location
Set the area you are in so Sikhami can show meetups, classes and search results near you first. Learn what is saved, who can see it, and how to change or remove it.
Updated 22 October 2026
Your location is the area you are in, for example "Koramangala, Bengaluru" or "Kota". Sikhami uses it to show things near you first, such as meetups and classes at institutes.
Only your area is saved, about a kilometre wide, never your exact spot. You can change it or remove it at any time.
Where to find it
- On a phone: on the Home screen, select the location pin at the top left of the top bar.
- From the menu: open More at the bottom of the left menu (computer) or ⋯ on your profile (phone), and select Location. The row shows your current area, or Set your location if you have none.
- On Meetups and Courses: the Meetups page and the Face to face tab of the Courses page have a Set location button. It says Change once your location is set.
All of these open the same Your location window.
Set your location
The Your location window gives you four ways to choose:
- Search: type a city, area or PIN code in Search city, area or locality, then select a result. A map opens so you can check it.
- Use my current location: your browser asks if sikhami.com may use your position. Allow it, and a map opens at that spot.
- Recent: places you picked before on this device. Select one to use it again at once. Clear empties this list.
- Popular cities: Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Chennai, Kolkata, Pune, Ahmedabad, Jaipur, Lucknow, Kota and Indore. Select one to set it at once.
Confirm your area on the map
- The map step is called Confirm your area. The pin stays in the centre. Drag the map until the pin is on your area.
- Under the map, Your area shows the name Sikhami will save, such as "HSR Layout, Bengaluru" with the state under it.
- If it says No area name here, move the map a little until a named area shows.
- Select Confirm location. You see "Location set to" and the area name.
Sikhami always names the area around the pin, never a street or a building. This keeps your exact place private.
What Sikhami uses it for
- Meetups: the meetups map shows where you are, a Nearby tab sorts meetups by distance, and meetups show how far away they are, for example "3.2 km away".
- Courses: in the Face to face tab of Courses, classes at institutes near you are listed first.
- Search: the Nearby posts, Nearby meetups and Nearby institutes filters measure distance from your location. If you have not set one, your browser asks for your position.
- Sharing a location in a chat: the map starts at your area, so you can move from there.
- Advertisers' forms: if you fill in a form on an ad, the city box may be filled in from your profile. You can change it before you send the form.
Where it is saved and who can see it
- On this device: your location and your recent places are kept in the browser you set them in. On another computer or phone, set your location again.
- On your account: when you are logged in, the area name and a point rounded to about one kilometre are also saved on your profile. When you are not logged in, it is kept on the device only.
- Not on your profile page: your profile does not show this area. The Location line on your profile comes from the Location and State boxes in Edit profile, which you fill in yourself.
To see who can see the rest of your account, read Privacy on Sikhami.
Change or remove your location
Change it
Open Your location and choose a new place in any of the four ways above. The new area replaces the old one.
Remove it
- Open Your location.
- Under Current location, select Remove.
- You see "Location removed". It is removed from this device and from your account.
Clear next to Recent only empties the recent list on this device. It does not remove your current location.
If your position cannot be found
| Message | What to do |
|---|---|
| Location is blocked for this site. | Your browser has said no to sikhami.com. Allow location in your browser's site settings, or search for your area instead. |
| Could not find your position. | Search for your area by name or PIN code instead. |
| Search isn't working right now | Check your internet connection, or use Use my current location. |
| No places match | Try a city, an area or a PIN code. |
Questions
Does Sikhami track where I am?
No. The website asks your browser for your position only when you choose to use it, for example with Use my current location. Only the area is saved.
Can other people see my exact address?
No. Sikhami saves only your area, rounded to about one kilometre, and your profile page does not show it.
Can I add a location to a post?
Not on the website. The post window on the website has no location option.
Why is my location empty on another computer?
The location you set is kept in the browser you set it in. Open Your location on the other device and set it there too.
Why does the saved name not show my street?
On purpose. Sikhami names only the area around the pin, so your exact place stays private.
