Browser notifications
How to turn browser (push) notifications on or off for sikhami.com, what to do when your browser blocks them, and why one might not arrive.
Updated 22 October 2026
Browser notifications, also called push notifications, are small pop-ups from your web browser. They tell you about likes, comments, follows, messages and more, even when the Sikhami tab is closed.
They are off until you turn them on. They are separate from the notifications of the Sikhami Android app; you can have both.
Turn them on
From the Notifications page
- Open Notifications.
- At the top, find the card Turn on notifications ("Hear about likes, comments, follows and messages in this browser, even when Sikhami is not open.").
- Tap Turn on.
- Your browser asks if sikhami.com may show notifications. Choose Allow.
- A message says "Browser notifications are on".
From settings
- Open More (on a phone: your profile, then ⋯) and choose Settings & privacy.
- Choose Notifications.
- Switch on Browser notifications ("Get pushes on this device even when the tab is closed.").
- Choose Allow when your browser asks.
The card on the Notifications page shows only while your browser has not been asked yet, or while notifications are blocked. If you close the card with the X, it does not come back in that browser. Use the switch in settings instead.
What you will see
A browser notification has a short title and a line of text, for example New Follower and "asha_21 started following you." Click it to open your Notifications page on sikhami.com.
When sikhami.com is already open in your browser, the same notification appears as a short message inside the page instead.
- Many likes or comments on the same post bring at most one browser notification every 10 minutes, while that notification stays unread.
- You get no notification for a message while you have that chat open.
- Club and meetup chat messages do not send notifications.
- Incoming calls do not use browser notifications. The website rings only while sikhami.com is open.
Turn them off
- Open Settings & privacy, then Notifications.
- Switch off Browser notifications.
You can also block notifications for sikhami.com in your browser's site settings. Your notifications still appear on the Notifications page either way. Email notifications are separate; see Email notifications.
One browser at a time
Sikhami sends browser notifications to one browser for each account: the browser where you most recently turned them on. If you turn them on in a second browser or on another computer, the first one stops getting them.
If you turn Browser notifications off in any browser, they stop for your account. To start them again in a browser where the switch still looks on, switch it off and then on again there.
When your browser blocks notifications
If you chose Block when your browser asked, the card says Notifications are blocked: "Notifications are blocked for sikhami.com in your browser settings. Allow them there, then reload this page." The settings switch is greyed out and says "Blocked in your browser settings for sikhami.com."
- Open your browser's site settings for sikhami.com. In most browsers you reach them from the icon at the left of the address bar.
- Set Notifications to Allow.
- Reload the page.
- Turn on Browser notifications in Sikhami's settings.
| Text under the switch | What it means |
|---|---|
| Checking this browser… | Wait a moment while Sikhami checks your browser. |
| Not supported in this browser. | This browser cannot show push notifications. Try another browser. |
| Not set up on the web yet. | Browser notifications are not available on the website right now. |
Not getting notifications?
- Check that Browser notifications is on in Sikhami's settings, and that sikhami.com is allowed in your browser's site settings.
- Check your computer's or phone's own notification settings, and any do-not-disturb mode, for your browser.
- If you turned notifications on in another browser more recently, only that browser gets them. Turn them on again in the browser you want.
- Several likes or comments together send only one notification every 10 minutes.
- There is no notification for a chat you have open, or for club and meetup chats.
Questions
Do browser notifications work when the Sikhami tab is closed?
Yes. They arrive even when no Sikhami tab is open, as long as your browser is running.
Will I still get notifications in the Android app?
Yes, if they are on in the app. The app's notifications are separate from browser notifications, and both can be on.
Why did I get only one notification for many likes?
Likes and comments on the same thing are grouped. While the notification is unread, Sikhami sends at most one browser notification for it every 10 minutes.
Do browser notifications ring for calls?
No. A call rings on the website only while sikhami.com is open. See Voice and video calls.
Can I get browser notifications on two computers?
No. Only the browser where you turned them on most recently gets them.
