Choose or change your username

The rules for Sikhami usernames, how to change yours, and what happens to your profile link, old mentions and shared links when you do.

Updated 22 October 2026

Your username is your unique name on Sikhami. It shows as @username under your name, and it is part of the web address of your profile.

Your full name can be the same as someone else's, but your username cannot. You can change it whenever you like, but each change has effects you should know about.

Where your username is used

  • Under your name on your profile, as @username.
  • In your profile link for people who are logged in: sikhami.com/u/ followed by your username.
  • In your public profile page, if your account is public: sikhami.com/profile/ followed by your username.
  • In posts: when someone types @ and your username in a post, it becomes a link to your profile.
  • In search results, under your name.

Username rules

  • 6 to 28 characters long.
  • Only lower-case letters a to z, numbers 0 to 9, dots (.) and underscores (_).
  • No spaces, hyphens, capital letters or other symbols. Capital letters you type are turned into lower-case.
  • No one else may have it. Learners, teacher profiles and institutes all share one list of usernames, so a username used by a teacher profile or an institute is taken for everyone.
ExampleAllowed?
priya.sharmaYes
rahul_jee2027Yes
Priya SharmaNo: it has a capital letter and a space
ravi-kumarNo: it has a hyphen
ankitNo: it is shorter than 6 characters

Change your username

  1. Open your profile and choose Edit profile.
  2. Change the text in Username.
  3. Choose Save at the top of the page.
MessageWhat to do
Username must be 6–28 characters.Make it longer or shorter.
Only lowercase letters, numbers, dots and underscores.Remove spaces, hyphens and other symbols.
That username is already taken.Try a different one, for example by adding a number, a dot or an underscore.

What changes when you change it

  • Your profile link changes to the new username. The old link shows "This account is not available".
  • Your public profile page moves to the new username too.
  • Your old username becomes free, and someone else can take it.
  • Old mentions of your old username in posts no longer lead to you. If someone else takes that username, they lead to that person.
  • Links you shared with Share profile keep working, because they point to your account, not to your username.
  • Your name, followers, posts, messages and everything else stay the same.

Choose a username you are happy to keep. Changing it often breaks links that other people saved.

Usernames you did not choose

  • If you signed up with Google, Sikhami made your username from your name and a few numbers.
  • If you signed up with a phone number or email, Finish setting up suggested one that you could change.
  • A guest account starts with a long code of letters and numbers as its username.

You can change any of these in Edit profile.

Usernames for teacher profiles and institutes

A teacher profile and an institute each have their own username, set in Learning studio. They must be at least 6 characters, in lower-case letters, numbers, dots and underscores. Institutes invite teachers by the teacher's username, and learners can search institutes by username. See Teacher profile and Create an institute.

Because everyone shares one list, your teacher profile or institute cannot use the same username as your own account. Pick a different one for each.

Questions

Can I use capital letters or spaces?

No. Use lower-case letters, numbers, dots and underscores only.

Someone already has the username I want. What can I do?

Add a number, a dot or an underscore, for example priya.sharma or priya_sharma12.

Can my teacher profile have the same username as my account?

No. Learners, teacher profiles and institutes share one list of usernames, so each must be different.

Does changing my username change my name?

No. Your full name is a separate field in Edit profile.

Will my followers lose me if I change my username?

No. Your followers, posts and chats stay with your account. Only links and mentions that use the old username stop leading to you.
