Hashtags and mentions
How to add hashtags to your posts so people can find them, how hashtag pages work, how to search for a hashtag, and how @mentions link to a profile.
Updated 22 October 2026
A hashtag is a word with # in front of it, such as #NEET2026 or #physics. When you put a hashtag in your post, the post is listed on that hashtag's page, so other people looking for the same subject can find it.
A mention is a username with @ in front of it, such as @riya.sharma. It turns into a link to that person's profile.
Add a hashtag to your post
- While writing your post, type # and then the word, with no space after the #. For example: #algebra.
- Add as many hashtags as you need, anywhere in the text.
- Publish the post. Each hashtag becomes a link.
Hashtags work in the words of a normal post, a photo or video post and a voice post. You can also put a hashtag in a poll's question: it is not shown as a link there, but the poll is still listed on the hashtag's page. See Create a post.
Rules for hashtags
- A hashtag ends at the first space or punctuation mark. #board-exam becomes #board. Use one word or join words with _ (for example #board_exam).
- For your post to be listed on the hashtag's page, use English letters (a to z), numbers and _ only. A hashtag in another script, such as Hindi, does not list your post on a hashtag page.
- Capital letters matter. #NEET and #neet are two different hashtags with two different pages. Check which form other people use, for example with Search.
- You cannot add or change hashtags after posting, because posts cannot be edited.
Hashtag pages
Click any hashtag in a post to open its page. The page title is the hashtag, for example #algebra.
- The page lists up to 20 posts that use the hashtag, the newest at the top.
- Archived and deleted posts are not listed.
- You can like, comment, share and save the posts right there.
- If no post has been listed yet, you see "No posts with #algebra yet." (with the hashtag you opened).
Hashtag pages list posts only. Hashtags in comments and in the words of a repost become links, but they do not list the comment or repost on the hashtag page.
Find a hashtag with Search
- Open Search.
- Type the hashtag or the word you are looking for.
- Choose the Hashtags tab. Each result shows the hashtag and how many posts have used it.
- Click a hashtag to open its page.
See Search for more about searching.
Hashtags in clips
You can put hashtags in a clip's description too ("Describe your clip. #hashtags help people find it."). They help people find the clip in Search. They become links like any hashtag, but hashtag pages list posts, not clips. See Upload a clip.
Mention someone with @
- Type @ followed by the person's username, with no space. For example: @riya.sharma.
- Publish the post or comment. The mention becomes a link to the profile with that username.
- Use the exact username, which you find on the person's profile. See Choose a username.
- Mentions work in the words of posts, reposts and comments. In a poll's question they are not turned into links.
- Sikhami does not send a notification to the person you mention. If you want them to see it, share the post with them in a chat. See Share, repost and save.
- There is no way to tag a person on a photo.
Tips for good hashtags
- Use the name of the subject, exam or skill, such as #chemistry, #UPSC or #guitar.
- Use a few hashtags that really fit the post rather than many that do not.
- Topics are another way to reach the right learners. You choose up to 3 topics when you create a post. See Create a post.
Questions
Why is my post not on the hashtag page?
Check that the hashtag uses only English letters, numbers and _, and that the capital letters match. The page also leaves out archived posts and shows up to 20 posts.
Are #NEET and #neet the same?
No. Capital letters make them different hashtags with different pages.
Does the person I mention get a notification?
No. A mention only links to their profile. Send them the post in a chat if you want them to see it.
Can I follow a hashtag?
No. You can open a hashtag's page any time from a post or from the Hashtags tab in Search.
Can I use a Hindi hashtag?
You can type it, but your post is not listed on a hashtag page for it. Use English letters for hashtags you want people to find.
