Import a YouTube playlist
Turn a public YouTube playlist into a free Sikhami video course in one step, keep it up to date with Re-sync, and learn which videos are skipped and why.
Updated 22 October 2026
If your lessons are already in a YouTube playlist, you do not need to upload them again. Paste the playlist link and Sikhami turns every public video in it into a lecture. The videos play inside Sikhami, in the same order as on YouTube.
A course built from a YouTube playlist is always free for students. You cannot set a price for it.
What you need
- An institute that you own. Every course belongs to an institute. See Create an institute.
- A public YouTube playlist. Private playlists cannot be imported.
- The right to use the videos. Only link playlists you have the rights to.
Make a new course from a playlist
- Open the Learning studio, go to My courses and click New course.
- Choose your Institute.
- Under What kind of course is it?, choose Video course.
- Type the Course name, and choose topics under What does this course teach? if you like.
- Under Where do the videos come from?, choose YouTube playlist.
- Paste the YouTube playlist link. On YouTube, open the playlist and copy the address from the browser; it contains list=.
- Click Create course. Sikhami creates the course, imports the playlist and opens the Curriculum tab.
When the import works, a message says how many videos were imported and from which playlist.
If the course is created but the import fails, you see Course created, but the playlist could not be imported, with the reason. Fix the problem, then use Import a YouTube playlist in the Curriculum tab to try again.
Add a playlist to a course you already made
- Open the course from My courses in the Learning studio.
- Open the Curriculum tab.
- Click Import a YouTube playlist.
- Paste the Playlist link and click Import.
This works only for a video course. A classroom (face-to-face) course has no curriculum.
What the import does
- The playlist becomes one section, named after the playlist.
- Each public video that can be played on other websites becomes one lecture, with its YouTube title, description and length, in playlist order.
- Unlisted, private and deleted videos are skipped. So are videos whose owner does not allow playing them on other websites. When you import or re-sync from the Curriculum tab, the message says how many were skipped.
- Up to 500 videos are imported from one playlist.
- The course becomes free.
- If the course has no picture, description or course contents yet, they are filled in from the playlist: its picture, its description and the list of lectures.
Your other sections stay as they are. You can still add your own sections, uploaded videos, YouTube links and tests next to the playlist section; the course stays free.
Keep the course up to date with Re-sync
After an import, the Curriculum tab shows Synced from the YouTube playlist with the playlist name and the date of the last sync, and a Re-sync button. Click Re-sync whenever you change the playlist on YouTube.
- New videos in the playlist are added as lectures.
- Titles, descriptions, lengths and the order are refreshed from YouTube.
- Videos you removed from the playlist are removed from the course.
- Students keep their progress on videos that are still in the playlist.
- Free previews you marked on those lectures are kept.
- Any Opens after (days) setting on the playlist lectures is cleared, and title changes you made on Sikhami are replaced by the YouTube titles.
A course can be linked to only one playlist. To use a different playlist, create a new course for it.
Publishing a playlist course
A playlist course still needs the same details as any video course before you can publish it: a course picture, name, description, course contents, topics, language and at least one lecture. The import fills some of these. The fee is already set to free. Your institute must be published too.
In the Edit tab, the Fee section says Free course. Courses built from a YouTube playlist are free on Sikhami. See Publish a course.
If the import does not work
| Message | What to do |
|---|---|
| That is not a YouTube playlist link. | Copy the address of the playlist page itself. It must contain list=. |
| That playlist was not found. It must be public. | Check the link, and make the playlist public on YouTube. |
| Only public playlists can be imported. | On YouTube, change the playlist from private or unlisted to public, then try again. |
| No public, embeddable videos in that playlist. | Every video was skipped. Make the videos public and allow playing them on other websites. |
| This course is already linked to a different playlist. | Each course can use one playlist. Create another course for the second playlist. |
| Only video courses can import a playlist. | Create a video course instead of a face-to-face course. |
| The playlist import took too long. | Wait a moment and try again. |
Questions
Can I charge money for a YouTube playlist course?
No. Courses built from a YouTube playlist are always free on Sikhami. To sell a course, upload your own videos instead.
Do students need a YouTube account?
No. The videos play inside Sikhami. Students enrol for free and watch on the course's lecture page.
Will my unlisted videos be imported?
No. The playlist import takes only public videos. You can still add an unlisted video by hand with YouTube link in a section.
Does Sikhami update the course on its own when I add a video on YouTube?
No. Click Re-sync in the Curriculum tab after you change the playlist.
Can a co-teacher import or re-sync the playlist?
Yes. Teachers who accepted a request to teach the course can import and re-sync, because they can work on the curriculum.
How many videos can one playlist have?
Up to 500 videos are imported from one playlist.
